In the end of years, Neujahrskonzert is always something could be heard from my mouth. Program, funny point to watch, the way to watch the live online, are all things I have to look for.
Neujahrskonzert is a must for my family to start a year, since I was born. Luckily, the first new year I encountered is the first time we can watch the konzert, the Karajan one, in the Mainland behind the wall. It’s rather easy to watch Neujahrskonzert in Mainland, simply turn on the teli, tune to CCTV 2, the amusing waltzes and polkas, with gracious movement of the musicians just appear in the box in my days in Canton. However, when I move to this so-called Asians world City, no direct live access to the Konzert could be found. The first few years, I can only listen to the sounds via BBC online radio. Some online video live streaming could not be found until recent years.
The official here, recently, quite enjoy the comparison our metropolis with London and New York. Frankly this is no the case culturally. Take the Neujahrskonzert der Wiener Philharmoniker as the case. In London, BBC air the concert simultaneously. New York , where was midnight when the konzert start its first not, however PBS will have a broadcast afterwards. Even region around us have something live to watch, state-owned CCTV will air this concert on his not-everyone-can-watch Music Channel, Taiwan TV will responsible the broadcast on the island.
So how about Hong Kong? The two commercial-minded Free-to-Air television, though with some new HD channels, well, out of issue, as such Viennese rhythm is just something with few audience. More important is when the climax comes with waltzes in the second half of the concert, the Prime time in Hong Kong comes. Sounds nobody, even the cable-tv you have to pay for, will put such homogeneous concert on their program. After all, putting some recent stars, is more secure than putting those foppish gentlemen who creating some far outdated sounds from the ancient hall, on our plasma screen.
Although it sounds impossible for us to have this concert on TV, but how about radio live broadcast? What have our only music channel, that is a government department, done? Nothing. Not able to do, or not to do I wonder.
So I remain skeptical on the West Kowloon Cultural District. It’s possible will be a well-design architectural wonder, however, is there any thing to help the citizen to get into the arts? Even a concert with only hilarious polkas and waltzes within 10 minutes, which is a best gateway to classical music, cannot find some agency to air, so how about emotional Mahler symphonies, and dramatic Opera, which all needs occupied hours of air time?
Thank you for your patience, if you’re still here reading. After all, though I express my views here, I still have to watch the next Neujahrskonzert, which comes within a month, via some online live streaming. If you’re too in this so-called Asians world city, also want to watch the live of the Neujahrskonzert, just contact me for the ways to get the live streaming, via private ways like e-mail, IM, etc…….
